Sound Absorbing Wood Panels: Reflections and Room Use

Sound absorbing wood panels should be evaluated as a room treatment with a specific construction and mounting. The wood face, openings and backing work together; the visual finish alone does not establish the acoustic result.

Begin with the room use

Describe whether the space is used for conversation, amplified audio, music practice or another activity. Note the listening positions and large reflective surfaces. A restaurant and a practice room may need different balances of treatment even if the finish is the same.

Separate absorption from isolation

Reducing reflected sound inside a room is different from limiting sound transmission to another room. Doors, windows, partitions and other paths remain part of an isolation assessment. Avoid interpreting an absorption rating as a promised reduction in neighbour noise.

Compare the actual assemblies

Ask for test evidence covering the selected panel, backing and installation. Review the frequency results and the report’s mounting description. Adding or removing an air space or another layer should be considered in that comparison rather than treated as a cosmetic change.

Coordinate treatment with the interior
